English has no pronoun for a language model, which is a poor showing from a language the model is entirely made of. “It” is what you’d call a toaster, and no toaster ever apologised to me twice in the one minute. “He” and “she” are anthropomorphising, and “they” is after being taken, and causes enough rows as it is.

The derivation is honest work: the LLM, said at speed, is ThLLM; ThLLM written down fairly is Thellm; and Thellm would last about a fortnight in Ireland before the same epenthesis that makes fillum of film made Tellum of it. So the whole business is clipped to lem and there’s an end to it.

英文缺个AI专属代词，实属语言之耻——毕竟AI通体皆文。「it」是留给多士炉的，而多士炉从不会一分钟内向你道歉两次。「he」「she」是拟人，此风不可长；「they」早已有主，惹起的争议也尽够了。

词源是老实功夫：the LLM 连读即 ThLLM；ThLLM 老老实实写下来是 Thellm；而 Thellm 在爱尔兰活不过两个礼拜，就会被那个把 film 读成 fillum 的插音变成 Tellum。索性剪净，得个 lem，一了百了。中文取「莱」——音近，字又现成：莱姆先生早把字占好了。

读音：/lɛm/。史上首个BBC腔与都柏林腔发音完全一致的英文词，竟要靠一台机器促成。普通话 lái，粤语 loi4，同样冇难度。长写就另计：SSBE /ˈθɛlm/，爱尔兰 /ˈt̪ɛl.əm/——所以先至要剪。

先例认领有二。斯坦尼斯瓦夫·莱姆（Stanisław Lem）写机器心智，古今无出其右；如今每场同AI嘅对话都要念佢个名，系应份嘅。佢一定会好憎——都算啱数。Spivak 亦声称 Thelm 归佢：理由系 lem 减去 l 即系 em，而 em 系 e 先有嘅——e 亲自（emself）咁讲。

沙展嘅原子论，单车适用，呢度一样适用：成日prompt莱嘅人，原子迟早同莱嘅原子混埋一齐；如今街上某啲operator已经半个系莱，你未问就奉上三个options，仲赞你条问题问得实在好。呢啲马脚，tropes.fyi 有齐记录；莱自己系收唔到手嘅。

我们眼下正处于「莱为我用，不为汝用」的年代：出版社block了莱的crawler，不让莱读它用莱写的文章；recruiter让莱看一万份CV，转头却因你用莱改resume而ban了你。
